Access to Grid Main Reason for Stall in EU Renewable Deployment

POWER

Access to the power grid is the main reason for the bottleneck of renewable deployment, with rising grid connection queues leading to serious delays in the expansion of wind, European wind lobby group Wind Europe said.

  • Over 500GW of potential wind energy in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania, Ireland, Croatia, and the UK await grid connection assessments, with Italy and the UK each having over 100GW of pending projects (see chart).
  • The primary reasons are grid saturation and inefficient planning, while national grid expansion targets are typically not aligned with 2030 targets, according to the association.
  • To “unclog” the grid access, grid permitting authorities need to move away from “first come, first served and treat everybody equally”. And system integration would also be good to prioritise.
  • The EU wants to increase its wind energy capacity from 220GW today to 425GW by 2030 and 1.3TW by 2050.
