Airstrikes Launched Against Militants in Iraq, Syria

  • Citing a defence ministry statement, Reuters report that Turkey's military carried out airstrikes against Kurdish militants in northern Iraq and Syria on Monday night, destroying 23 targets and sustaining an escalation of conflict south of the country's border. The upswing in violence began on Friday when nine Turkish soldiers were killed in clashes with Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants in northern Iraq, prompting Ankara to conduct airstrikes and operations both there and in northern Syria, Reuters write. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Defense Minister Yasar Guler will speak in parliament on the matter later today.
  • The first cabinet meeting of the new year will be held today at 1100GMT/1400 local time. Participants will discuss the economy, the rate of wage increase for pensioners and anti-terror operations, according to Hurriyet.
  • Russian oil companies continue to increase sea shipments of oil to Turkey, mainly from Baltic ports, Kommersant report. In December, Turkey set a new record for Russian oil imports, 444K bbl/day.
