AKP Assault on Pro-Kurdish HDP Likely to Elicit International Response

TURKEY

Thoughts Lawsuit for HDP Closure

  • AKP attempting to shut down Turkey's third largest party (Kurdish) during a supposed human rights push proves the extent of the AKP's concern over lost support during 2021/21 and that any supposed human rights actions plan is nothing more than window dressing – as we have noted.
  • Erdogan's goal is to further divide the opposition to cement power within the AKP-MHP alliance, as has been seen with latest measures to allow parties with as little as 7% support to participate in elections
  • The international community will not look favourably on this and may react with sanctions (EU & US), given recent pressure on Russia.
  • This is largely evident by the response seen in USD/TRY and could derail the positive progress made by the CBRT and shift the trajectory of the cross back towards 8.00 and beyond (earlier than expected by the sell-side)
