NATGAS: Algeria’s Gas Exports Likely Peaked in 2023: Platts

NATGAS

Platts estimates total Algerian LNG exports for 2024 at 16.7 bcm, down 12% on the year. This suggests 2023 was a temporary surge rather than a new dawn for LNG exports.

  • Platts forecasts 31 bcm if Algerian pipeline gas to Europe in 2025, a 1.2 bcm increase on the year. However, LNG exports are seen dropping to 15.2 bcm, a 1.5 bcm annual decrease.
  • Platts now forecasts a less severe production decline for Algeria through to 2030. Gas production totalled 105 bcm in 2023. It should hit 103 bcm in 2025 before declining to 92 bcm by 2030.
  • Based on this, Platts forecasts steady declines in pipeline and LNG exports from 2026 onwards, with rising domestic gas-fired-power plants also pressuring exports.
  • Platts noted that Algeria’s production is not held back by resource availability, but rather poor fiscal terms that have deterred investment. A more investor-friendly environment could help boost future output.
