ANC NEC Delays Meeting To Allow For Ramaphosa's Speech, MPs Agree To Full Debate Next Tues

South African lawmakers agreed to a full debate on the report of a panel of experts on the Phala Phala scandal to be held next Tuesday, TimesLive reports citing the outcome of today's proceedings of the programming committee.

  • It is unclear which voting method parliament will adopt while deciding on whether to approve the report. Opposition Democratic Alliance chief whip Gwarube called for using a roll-call system, while the African Transformation Movement is pushing for a secret ballot. The choice of the voting system is up to the Speaker.
  • All eyes are on the "imminent" address from President Ramaphosa amid speculation that he might announce his resignation. News24 reported that the ruling African National Congress has postponed the planned meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) until Friday to allow for the President to address the nation.
