ARA barge Rates Driven Up By Strikes and Rising Water Levels

FREIGHT

Barge freight rates in NWE are increasing due to strike action in Belgium disrupting barge shipments, while closures on the Rhine due to high water levels will squeeze the market further, Argus said.

  • Argus is assessing barge rates at one-year highs and have exceeded $9/mt since Nov. 27.
  • Barge loadings in Antwerp face delays due to a 48-hour strike which started on Dec. 5. This has left hundreds of barges stuck on the Albert canal, causing congestion, according to Riverlake.
  • Meanwhile, rising water levels on the Rhine risk shutting parts of the waterway. Levels are expected to reach 750cm at Maxau on Dec. 12, causing a sailing ban.
  • Barge movements are already disrupted in Germany after the grounding of a barge between Bingen and Kaub on Dec. 6, Argus said.
  • Barge fleets are also fully booked for the next two weeks with a lack of availability until next year.
