Arctic LNG 2 Loads First Cargo: Kpler

LNG

The Novatek-operated LNG 2 export plan on Russia’s Gydan Peninsula has exported it first LNG cargo via the 138 mcm Pioneer LNG tanker, according to Kpler.

  • This marks a significant milestone for the 19.8m mtpa facility which has been under US sanctions since November.
  • Exports had initially been expected to commence from Q1 2024 onwards, but the sanctions hampered that timeline.
  • The Pioneer docked at Arctic LNG 2 on Aug. 1, but its current location is unclear as it used signal spoofing to avoid detection, the first time in the LNG market.
  • This is more common in the oil market to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil.
  • Bloomberg reported earlier that the Pioneer has no know insurer and is managed by a little know Indian company.
  • The facility is also facing the challenge of recruiting enough ice class tankers to ship its gas via the shorter Northern route to Asia.
