President Alexander van der Bellen is set to fire the starting gun on coalition talks on 4 October. On Friday he will begin talks with each of the party leaders ahead of inter-party coalition negotiations getting underway. Earlier today he accepted the resignation of the incumbent Austrian People's Party (ÖVP)-Green gov't, which will remain in place in a caretaker capacity (keeping the day-to-day functions of gov't running but not enacting new laws) until a new coalition is formed.
- Speaking following the dismissal of the gov't of Chancellor Karl Nehammer, van der Bellen said that "The next five years will bring challenges, the first challenge is to form a new government." As president van der Bellen sits as an independent, but prior to taking office was associated with the Greens. He is a staunch opponent of the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ).
- The FPÖ has started its first internal meetings since the 29 Sep election as it puts together its negotiating team and agrees on its policy positions for upcoming talks. The FPÖ secured first place in the election, and Nehammer (from the ÖVP) has said to the president that as such the party should have the initial mandate to seek to form a coalition.
- It usually takes between 60-70 days for coalitions to form following Austrian federal elections, although in 1999 it took 124 days for the ÖVP and FPÖ to reach a consensus and sign a coalition agreement.
