Baltics, Nordics, Eastern Europe Experience More Solar Irradiance in May

POWER

Finland, Sweden, Baltics, Poland and neighbouring countries had up to 30% above the seasonal average of solar Irradiance – the measure of solar output over an area - in May compared to more southern countries like the UK and France due to warmer temperatures and clearer skies, according to firm Solcast, cited by PV Magazine.

  • High pressure over Scandinavia increased irradiance in eastern Europe by limiting clouds and rainfall, while low-pressure systems brought clouds to Western Europe, according to analyst at Solcast.
  • Regions including the UK, Ireland, France, Southern Germany, and Northern Italy experienced irradiance up to 20% below average.
  • Southwestern Spain and southern Portugal had 10% above average May irradiance due to the Pyrenees shielding them from Western Europe's low pressure.
