Biden Bilateral Meeting With Colombian President Duque Today

WHITE HOUSE

13:40 ET 18:40 GMT: US President Joe Biden will host Colombian President Ivan Duque in a bilateral meeting at the White House today.

  • The meeting will be the first White House visit for the Colombian president and follows a week of blowback against Biden administration approaches to the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro.
  • Colombian officials criticised the move by Washington - presumed by many to be laying the groundwork for easing of sanctions on the Venezuelan oil sector.
  • Colombian Energy Minister Diego Mesa said: 'If you’ve just banned oil from what they call the Russian dictator, it’s difficult to explain why are you going to be buying oil from the Venezuelan dictator.'
  • Colombian elections take place next week and the frontrunner Gustavo Petro has run on an anti-oil platform but Biden may be hoping to press the outgoing Duque on supplementing Russian supply and the future of the Colombian oil sector.
