Biden Lauds Tentative Railways Deal, Tomorrow's Strike Averted

WHITE HOUSE

The White House has released a statement from President Joe Biden on the tentative agreement between railway unions, railway companies, and the federal gov't on avoiding industrial action.

  • Biden: "The tentative agreement reached tonight is an important win for our economy and the American people....For the American people, the hard work done to reach this tentative agreement means that our economy can avert the significant damage any shutdown would have brought."
  • Full statement: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statement...
  • Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh: "...Our rail system is integral to our supply chain, and a disruption would have had catastrophic impacts on industries, travelers and families across the country."
  • The 'cooling off' period put in place by the Biden administration was due to end Friday. If no agreement was reached, rail workers in the US were set to strike for the first time since 1992, with a notable impact on the US economy by disrupting supply chains, logistics, and transport for workers.
