BJP Retains Control Of PM Modi's Home State, But Loses Himachal Pradesh

INDIA

In state election results released today, India's governing right-wing Hindu nationalist BJP retained control of the home state of PM Narendra Modi, Gujarat, the fourth-most populous state in the union. However, it was not all good news for the governing party, as the main opposition Indian National Congress (INC) won a majority in the previously BJP-controlled state of Himachal Pradesh.

  • In Gujarat, the BJP looks on course to have almost swept the board, winning 156 of the 182 seats on offer, up from 99 at the previous election. The INC fell from 77 seats in the 2017 election, to 59 by dissolution, and just 17 in the election.
  • The Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh continued its lengthy trend of ousting the incumbent, with the BJP winning just 26 seats, down from 44 in 2017. The INC won a majority with 39, up from 21 previously. This is the eighth election in a row that the control of the chief minister's position will have changed hands.
