Blackford To Step Down As SNP Westminster Leader

SCOTLAND

Ian Blackford MP (SNP, Ross, Skye & Lochaber) has confirmed that he will be stepping down as the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in Westminster. He took on the high-profile role in 2017, and in a statement said that he would remain as an MP while taking on 'a new role at the centre of the SNP's independence campaign, leading on business engagement' but that it was a time for 'fresh leadership'.

  • While party leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is the senior most politician within the leftist pro-independence SNP, the party's Westminster leader is often the most visible SNP politician for the rest of the UK.
  • Stephen Flynn (SNP, Aberdeen South) seen as the frontrunner to replace Blackford in the role that affords its bearer two direct questions to PM Rishi Sunak during the weekly prime minister's question time, behind only Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer.
  • Blackford's resignation comes six months after aDaily Mail story alleged that he had encouraged SNP MPs in Westminster to back a colleague who was found to have acted inappropriately towards staff.
