Blinken In Tel Aviv To Call For Pause; Focus On Hezbollah Leader Speech

ISRAEL

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is holding his third in-person meeting with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu since the 7 Oct attacks by Hamas amid a shift in the US' stance on the Israel-Hamas war. While the US is continuing to offer unambiguous support to Israel, Blinken is expected to press Netanyahu to engage in 'humanitarian pauses' in the fighting in and bombardment of Gaza to allow for aid distribution and for Palestinians to leave the Gaza strip through the Rafah crossing to Egypt.

  • Ahead of the visit, Blinken stated the trip would focus on avoiding a regional escalation, protecting civilians, and laying groundwork for a 'lasting peace' after the war.
  • All eyes today on the public address from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who is set to speak at 1500 local time (0900ET, 1300GMT, 1400CET). Following Hezbollah's largest single attack on Israel during the Israel-Hamas war on 2 Nov, involving 19 simultaneous strikes, all regional actors will be watching closely to see if Nasrallah pushes Hezbollah towards opening a second front in the north or remaining on the sidelines with sporadic strikes.
