Blinken Says Iran Nuclear Deal Seems Less Likely In Near Term

Wires carry comments from U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken who speaks from Mexico, noting that Iran's response to the latest JCPOA proposal is a "step backward" and makes striking a deal less likely in the near term.

  • "I can't give you a timeline except to say, again, that Iran seems either unwilling or unable to do what is necessary to reach an agreement," Reuters cites him as saying.
  • His comments come after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told his Israeli counterpart Monday that a deal with Iran "certainly won't happen soon, although it looked for a while like it would."
  • Separately, the IAEA accused Iran of deepening the nuclear "information gap" amid Tehran's accusations that the UN nuclear watchdog has overstepped its mandate.
