Boluarte To Become First Female President After Castillo "Coup" Fails

The Peruvian Congress has voted in favour of a motion impeach President Pedro Castillo.

  • According to El Comercio, "Congress will swear in [Vice President] Dina Boluarte as the first female president" of Peru at 15:00 PET/ET 20:00 GMT.
  • El Comercio: "While the vote in Congress continue[d], the joint Command of the Armed Forces and the PNP ratifies its respect for the constitutional order and points out that any act contrary to the provisions of article 134 of the Constitution constitutes "a violation of the Constitution and generates non-compliance by part of the armed forces and the PNP.”
  • Benjamin Alverez at DW News: "Peru's Congress votes to impeach President Pedro Castillo hours after he said that he would dissolve Congress. Vice President Dina Boluarte will be sworn in as president later today."
