BRICS Summit Kicks Off, S. Africa's Relations With US Said To Be Improving

  • South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping before the start of the 15th BRICS Summit later today. At least 50 foreign heads of states and ministers will visit South Africa to attend the conference this week, alongside a number of international officials.   • Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor reiterated that South Africa does not see the BRICS as a rival bloc to the G7, while calls for a multi-polar world order should not be construed as an anti-Western agenda.
  • Diplomatic sources told News24 that relations between South Africa and the US "have improved, with the US adding that there has been more engagement in the past six months than in the last decade."
  • The opposition condemned a SARB report clearing President Cyril Ramaphosa of wrongdoing in the Phala Phala affair, on the grounds that no "perfected transaction" took place and hence Ramaphosa had no obligation to declare FX holdings.
