BRUSSELS WATCH: 'EFSI 2.0' Agreed In Principle; Extended 2020

By Tara Oakes
BRUSSELS (MNI) - The European Commission hailed Wednesday an agreement in
principle reached overnight on an extension to the European Fund for Strategic
Investments (EFSI).
EFSI 2.0, as the project is being called, would see the timeline of its
funding extended to 2020 under the deal.
The investment target has also been increased from E315bln to at least
E500bln, the EC added in a statement.
EFSI is a key plank of the 'Juncker investment plan', and the progress on
the push for EFSI 2.0 comes hours before Commission President Jean-Claude
Juncker's State of the Union address.
"With its increased firepower and duration, the EFSI will continue to be an
important driving force in the EU's economic recovery," Commission Vice
President Jyrki Katainen said in a statement.
The new, more ambitious EFSI 2.0 political agreement worked out in
trilogies overnight still requires formal adoption by the European Parliament
and the Council before it comes into force.
