Bulgaria gets EU Approval for Gas Storage Expansion

The EU Commission approved a Bulgarian government plan to invest €16 million to expand the country’s only natgas storage facility, according to Bloomberg.

  • The project will boost the Chiren Underground Storage's (UGS) capacity to1 bcm from 550 mcm currently.
  • The completion of the whole expansion project is targeted for July 2024.
  • Chiren UGS is one of four targeted projects listed in the resolution to increase the natural gas storage capacity in Southeastern Europe. The three others are in Romania.
