Cabinet Approval Rating Hits Record Lows Amid Continued Headwinds For LDP

The assessment of Prime Minister Kishida's Cabinet turned net negative for the first time in the latest Asahi poll, as the share of respondents dissatisfied with the government's performance revisited an all-time low.

  • The Cabinet's approval rating fell to 41% from 47% recorded in the previous poll, while the rate of disapproval climbed to 47% from 39%. The approval rating was last seen at 41% in October last year when Japan held its general election.
  • Prime Minister Kishida continues to face headwinds related to the Liberal Democratic Party's ties to the Unification Church and controversies over the state funeral for the late ex-Premier Shinzo Abe.
  • The margin by which the opponents of holding a state funeral outnumber the proponents grew wider, with opponents showing higher rates of Cabinet disapproval than the general population.
