Cabinet To Discuss Energy Subsidies During Meeting In Katowice

POLAND
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will attend the European Economic Congress in Katowice alongside Prime Minister Donald Tusk. On her arrival to Poland yesterday, von der Leyen announced that the "article 7 procedure" launched against Poland over rule-of-law concerns that arose under the previous administration can be closed. Her declaration marked another step in the rapprochement between Brussels and Poland's new pro-EU government, after the unfreezing of suspended post-pandemic aid earlier this year, even as cohabitation with President Andrzej Duda has been standing in the way of any major reforms that would reverse the changes made by the previous administration.
  • A spokesman for the Minister Coordinator of Special Services said that agents neutralised wiretapping devices found in a room in Katowice where the Cabinet will hold its meeting today. Ministers will discuss the proposed adjustments to the energy price cap in 2H2024, among others.
  • Looking ahead, reminder that the NBP is expected to to keep interest rates unchanged on Thursday, with Governor Glapinski set to hold his press conference on Friday. Separately, PM Tusk will reshuffle his Cabinet on Friday.
  • The NBP will release data on official reserves at 13:00BST/14:00CEST.
