CAD Underperforming Peers As Equities Firm

  • USDCAD at 1.3738 has lifted close to overnight highs but it remains in tight ranges after limited net reaction from Friday’s mixed labour report.
  • An earlier low of 1.3718 has again cleared support at 1.3731 (50-day EMA) but it struggles to build on the move to open 1.3657 (Jul 17 low). Technical trends look bullish meanwhile with resistance at 1.3856 (Aug 6 high).
  • Far weaker than expected buildings permits help CAD continue to underperform high beta peers on the day despite USD strength, even if the typically volatile report only has so much sway (-14% M/M in June (cons +6%) after -13% in May).
  • Latest CFTC data showed only a marginal trimming of in CAD net shorts away from record highs following the second dovish BoC cut, dipping from 56% to 54% of open interest.
