- Q: Do you worry about someone like Donald Trump winning the election given the high tariff agenda he’s running?
- Macklem: No comment on politics. The Canada-US trade relationship is important to both our countries. Anything that were to disturb that could have a significant effect on the Canadian economy. It’s been a very durable relationship.
- Q: Following up on “Canada needs to reduce trade barriers so that integrating Canada to the North American value chain is more attractive for businesses”, what specific trade barriers are you referring to?
- Macklem: A few things. We have too many barriers between provinces, some actual and others more professional qualifications. Having a more seamless, open interprovincial relationship would be a good place to start. We need to make sure we’ve got the infrastructure to get products to market, that includes port capacity, trucking, rail, north-south and east-west.
