Canada's Fort McMurray Faces Second Wildfire

OIL

Canadian oil sand hub, Fort McMurray, faces a second wildfire threatening the town, north of the city and closer to major energy operations.

  • Firefighters took advantage of cooler weather and shifting winds to contain the fire southwest of the city which prompted partial evacuations earlier this week.
  • Around 10% of the city has been evacuated because of the fires.
  • A major fire in 2016 around Fort McMurray shuttered around 1mn bpd of production.
  • Suncor, owner of the operations near the latest fire has said operations are not currently impacted.
  • Companies like Imperial Oil have said they have reduced to essential staff only at some operations.
