Canada Unexpected Fall In Jobs While Wages Accelerate

  • Canada jobs -1.4K in June vs the consensus for +20K. 
  • The unemployment rate increased more than expected to 6.4% from 6.2%, the highest rate since January 2022 where it was +6.5%. 
  • Average hourly wages accelerated for the second time to the fastest pace since Dec 2023 at 5.4%. The BoC has said they will look at broader measures of wage growth. 
  • Hours worked -0.4% MOM, +1.1% YOY. 
  • The employment rate decreased for the eighth time in nine months as the labour force continues to expand +40.4K from May. 
  • Excluding 2020, the employment rate of returning students was at its lowest point since June 1998. 
  • Long term unemployment increased 4 pp from a year ago to 17.6%. 
  • The inflation report on the 16th of July will be the last major piece of data before the Bank of Canada interest-rate decision on July 24th.
