Canadian Wildfires Threaten Oil Production

A number of lightning strikes have started a range of new wildfires in Canada, putting oil production under threat.

  • There are more than a dozen fires in the Fort McMurray region.
  • The Trans Mountain pipeline said on Wednesday it was still operating safely and using sprinklers to protect its infrastructure.

  • Gusty winds are expected to fan the fires but rain is forecast for overnight.
  • Imperial Oil said it has reduced non-essential staff at its 275,000-bpd Kearl oil sands site.
  • "While wildfires have already forced some producers to curtail production, these fires still threaten a large amount of supply," ING Group analysts said in a research note.
