CDU/CSU Officials Call For End To 'Jamaica' Talks, Time In Opposition

GERMANY

A number of parliamentarians from within the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union have issued comments seemingly acknowledging the strong likelihood the centre-right will not play a part in the next German gov't.

  • Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier tweets: "The traffic light train has just left the station. For the 1st time in 41 yrs the FDP & SPD (and Greens) are seriously discussing a coalition. CDU/CSU are bystanders. We now have to do our homework and show we understood the lesson from 26.09."
  • Newly-elected Baden-Wurttemberg Bundestag member Fabain Gramling tweets: "The Greens and FDP have made a preliminary decision. I don't approve of the decision, but I respect it. Now it is not necessary to remain in the waiting room, but to set the course for the future within the CDU"
  • CSU head Markus Soeder has stated that the start of talks between the SPD, Greens and FDP marks a 'clear preliminary decision' for those three parties to form a 'traffic light' coalition.
  • CDU head Armin Laschet continues to talk up to prospect of a 'Jamaica' coalition with the Greens and FDP, but momentum behind this option is seriously flagging.
