CDU Records Lowest Polling Since Mar-20 As State Elections Approach

The latest INSA opinion poll shows the centre-right Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) of Chancellor Angela Merkel polling at 30%, the party's lowest level of support since 18 March 2020.

  • Germany, INSA poll: CDU/CSU: 30% (-2.5), Social Democratic Party (SPD): 17%, Greens: 17%, Alternative for Germany (AfD): 11.5% (+0.5), Free Democratic Party (FDP): 10.5% (+0.5), Die Linke: 9% (+1). +/- vs. 26 Feb-1 Mar. Fieldwork: 5-8 March 2021, Sample size: 2,029
  • There is significant focus this week on state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wurttemberg to take place on Sunday. A poor result for the CDU could damage the prospect of party chairman Armin Laschet becoming the chancellor candidate for the CDU-CSU in the September federal election. CSU chair and Bavaria's minister-president Markus Soeder seen as a potential alternative to Laschet, who is viewed as a close acolyte of Angela Merkel in policy terms.
