CHILE: Economic Activity Data in Focus Post BCCh Decision

  • The impact on CLP from the marginal hawkish BCCh surprise will likely be offset by the 1.25% move lower for copper futures on Thursday. Further clouding the short-term peso trajectory is the imminent release of economic activity data (Imacec) for June. Data is expected to rise from its prior reading and is scheduled for release at 1330BST/0830ET:
    • June Economic Activity YoY, est. 1.5%, prior 1.1%; MoM est. 0.2%, prior -0.4%
  • The Chilean Senate chamber passed a bill to modernize its tax authority and increase revenue collection, but it will be sent back down to a committee to resolve outstanding disagreements. The vote for the bill, which seeks to boost tax revenue by an amount equivalent to 1.5% of GDP to fund social spending, raises hopes it could become law in time for the next budget due in September, Finance Minister Mario Marcel said Tuesday.
