CNPC and Kazakhstan's KazTransGas signed a supplementary agreement Feb. 11, boosting contracted gas volume for 2024-25 by one-third., Platts reported. Specific volumes were not disclosed, however. 

  • CNPC also finalized a crude oil spot purchase agreement with Tengizchevroil, expanding oil trade collaboration.
  • Kazakhstan has been a key natural gas supplier to China through the Central Asia natural gas pipeline, despite past shortfalls due to domestic shortages.
  • In 2024, Kazakhstan exported 3.81m mt of gas to China, comprising 6.9% of China's total pipeline gas imports of 55.04m mt, Platts said.
  • Kazakhstan aims to raise its total gas production to 91 Bcm by 2030. To achieve this, it is constructing four new gas plants with a combined annual capacity of 84 bcm by 2030.
  • Kazakhstan is also trying to boost pipeline capacity by constructing a pipeline parallel to the existing 15 bcm/y Beineu-Bozoi-Shymkent natural gas pipeline by 2026-27.
