China: "De-Risking" Based On Competition Anxiety Is Counterproductive

Reuters reporting the Chinese Embassy in Germany response to the release of Germany's first comprehensive strategy document on China, stating that, "forcibly 'de-risking' based on ideological prejudice and competition anxiety will only be counterproductive and artificially intensify risks."

  • The embassy said: "China is Germany's partner in dealing with challenges, not rival," adding that "many challenges facing Germany not caused by china."
  • The embassy said, "it hopes Germany views china's development rationally, comprehensively and objectively... China [and] Germany's cooperation including in trade is a greater development opportunity, rather than a risk."
  • Germany's strategy seeks to apply pressure on China to reform its market practices and de-risk supply chains from China but tracks closely with a G7 message, delivered in May, which stated that the group is, "not pursuing a decoupling of our economies.”
  • AP notes that, "The strategy was released a few weeks after Scholz and about half of his Cabinet hosted a delegation led by new Chinese Premier Li Qiang," which raised concerns in the West that Germany may choose to maintain a more dovish position on China.
