China LNG Imports Fall in June Amid Higher Spot Gas Prices: ICIS

LNG

China's LNG imports fell to 5.9m tonnes in June 2024 from 6.3m tonnes in June 2023, according to ICIS.

  • Imports into China have dipped after a strong start to the year with seasonal record monthly highs seen in February, March and April 2024.
  • An increase in spot gas prices in recent months makes extra LNG imports less attractive after imports were boosted by the downtrend in prices at the start of the year.
  • The all-time record for June was 6.4m tonnes from June 2021.
  • Imports in May 2024 were above 2023, but below the record levels for May seen in 2021.
  • LNG imports in 2022 were the lowest in recent year with as the economy slowed due to covid lockdowns.
