China Sends 25 Military Aircraft Into Taiwanese Airspace Amid CPTPP Spat

The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense has confirmed that 25 Chinese PLA aircraft entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on October 1, as tensions between Beijing and Taipei grow as both seek to join the CPTPP trade bloc.

  • In response, Taiwan scrambled jets to escort the PLA aircraft out of Taiwanese airspace.
  • Both China and Taiwan applied to join the CPTPP in September, with Taiwan fearing China could seek to stymie its efforts to join the bloc, while Beijing will be wary of other CPTPP members (notably Japan) allowing Taiwan membership and thereby conferring legitimacy to the Taiwanese gov't.
