Chinese Independent Refiners Show Import Weakness in April

AChina’s Shandong refiners are bringing forward planned maintenance due to bearish margins - curtailing imports of discounted crude.

  • The country’s peak refinery maintenance is also boosting its naphtha imports according to Vortexa.
  • Asia’s imports of refined products reached a one-year high in April – China has led as the largest importing country so far this year.
  • Shandong refiners have access to higher levels of discounted barrels due to strong Iranian flows and Venezuelan barrels coming back following the reimposition of sanctions. Chinese refiners also showed less demand for Russian barrels in April. (see chart)
