- Asked about the probability of cutting the benchmark policy rate to 4% by the end of this year, CNB Deputy Governor Eva Zamrazilova noted that it "would be a nice number", but this outcome is far from a done deal even as it cannot be ruled out. The official said that she supports trimming the 2-week repo rate by at least 25bp at the coming Bank Board meetings from its current level of 6.75%. Note that the Board meets to discuss monetary policy eight times a year, so proceeding in 25bp steps would bring the key rate to 4.75% at end-2024. Zamrazilova added that the central bank wants to avoid holding rates too high for too long, but also doesn't want to "underestimate the persistence of inflationary pressures".
- The Chamber of Deputies resumes session on the government's proposal to introduce postal voting to boost turnout among Czechs living abroad. The proposal has drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers, who argue that it would soften the principle of secret ballot.
- Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurecka remains under pressure amid growing discontent among members of his party. KCU-CSL's three regional chapters (from South Bohemia, Pilsen and Moravia-Silesia) have called for a party congress to be held in spring to elect new party leadership. Hospodarske Noviny reports that four potential successors have already emerged. In the meantime, the party will hold a national conference next week.
