Congress Rejects Motion To Debate Impeachment Of President Castillo

News wires report that the Peruvian Congress rejected a motion to debate the impeachment of President Castillo with 76-46 votes against. The motion was tabled under the constitution's notoriously loosely defined "moral incapacity" clause and would need the votes of 52 of the 130 lawmakers to pass.

  • While the President has had meagre support in Congress, he managed to secure the backing of some key groups at the eleventh hour before the vote.
  • If lawmakers approved the motion, Castillo would have to defend himself in Congress before the final impeachment vote, which would require a two-thirds majority to pass.
