Constitutional Court Delays Verdict On Pita's Shareholding Case

THAILAND

Thailand's Constitutional Court did not issue a verdict in the so-called "shareholding case" brought against Move Forward Party's Pita Limjaroenrat, who remains suspended as a lawmaker pending the ruling by the top judicial body. The Court said that it will resume its deliberations on November 22 at 09:30am local time.

  • Pita has been charged with applying for public office despite knowing about his ineligibility due to an alleged ownership of shares in a media company. Both Pita and his party have also been accused of trying to overthrow the monarchy.
  • Several days ago, Pita told AFP that he was planning to make another attempt to become Prime Minister, which in his view is "just a matter of time". His candidacy was rejected in a parliamentary vote, even as the MFP were election front-runners.
  • A fresh legal challenge against the MFP came from the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT), which last week asked the authorities to consider dissolving the MFP over the fact that it leads the opposition while its former member remains Deputy Speaker.
