Constitutional Court Starts Hearings On Pension Reform

  • The Constitutional Court begins hearings on the opposition's challenge to the government's pension reforms intended to contain budget deficits. A new survey by the Centre for Public Opinion Research (CVVM) showed that most Czechs are critical of slower pension increases, but most also don't want to make larger contributions to the pension system through higher taxes or social insurance payments. Should the top court side with the lawsuit filed by the main opposition ANO party, the government would have to pay back the income foregone by each pensioner as a result of the reform, i.e. around CZK1,010/month on average since the beginning of June (per iDNES calculations).
  • The KDU-CSL party convened last night to discuss a scandal involving its chairman Marian Jurecka, who participated in a Christmas party on the day of a deadly shooting in Prague. The party maintained its support for Jurecka and said he should stay on as Labour Minister, following similar remarks by Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
