Core Inflation Surges To Record 10.4% YoY

  • Yesterday, economic data showed that inflation accelerated to 11.1% YoY in February, the fastest pace since June 1998 (vs. 10.4% exp), up from 9.9% the previous month.
  • The surge in inflation has been mostly driven by the rise of food, energy and fuels prices.
  • CNB reported that core inflation accelerated to a record 10.4%.
  • We have seen that policymakers are trying to limit their ‘aggressive tightening policy’ as further hikes will lead to a significant deceleration in the economic activity.
    • The chart below shows that the surge in ST rates has been pricing in a significant slowdown in Czech economic activity.
  • This week, CNB Governor Rusnok said on public radio that he cannot predict next rate decision; any future hike would be considered 'cosmetic fine-tuning'.
