CZECHIA: Czechia's Deficit Narrows On Better Tax Collections

  • E15 ran a report noting that the Czech National Bank (CNB) as well as Security Information Service (BIS) and law enforcement agencies believe that the government should intensify efforts to combat sanction evasion and prevent domestic firms from doing business with Russia. The authorities have been pointing to suspicious exports of dual-use technologies, which are sent to countries such as Turkey, Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan and then get re-exported to Russia.
  • Czechia's budget deficit narrowed to CZK178.6bn in June from CZK210.4bn prior due to higher-than-expected tax collections. Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura commented that "these results show that we will be able to meet the deficit plan." Czechia's spending plan for this year envisages a full-year deficit target of CZK252bn.
  • Local media outlets reported that the nationalist SPD party is in talks with another far-right party PRO 2022, with the two formations exploring possible cooperation in the regional elections in September. This comes after the SPD's disappointing result in the European election prompted its leaders to rethink their earlier rivalry with other right-wing parties.
