CZECHIA: Ex-Auto Retail Sales Miss Expectations

  • Czechia's ex-auto real retail sales rose just 4.4% Y/Y in May, missing the consensus forecast of +5.3% and slowing from the revised +5.7% in April. The sequential reading showed continued stagnation, with sales ticking 0.1% lower compared with the previous month.
  • Hospodarske Noviny reported that ANO's Andrej Babis and Hungarian PM Viktor Orban failed to persuade Poland's Law and Justice (PiS) to join their new "Patriots for Europe" faction in the European Parliament, with PiS opting to remain in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) alongside Czechia's ruling ODS.
  • The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs announced it will increase short-term benefits for Ukrainian refugees but will also reduce benefits for anyone staying in Czechia for longer than 90 days, achieving a net positive outcome from the budget perspective.
