CZECHIA: Fiala To Meet With New Pirate Party Head, CNB Keeps CCyB Rate Unchanged

CZECHIA
  • The Czech National Bank (CNB) unanimously decided to leave the countercyclical buffer (CCyB) rate unchanged at 1.25%. However, the central bank said that it "expects [the cyclical risks in the banking sector’s balance sheet] to increase gradually over the outlook horizon of its autumn forecast." Bank Board's Karina Kubelkova warned that "if the economy continues to move into the growth phase of the financial cycle, the CNB is ready to increase the buffer rate." The central bank will publish its full Financial Stability Report – Autumn 2024 alongside the minutes of yesterday's meeting on December 13.
  • The cabinet refrained from appointing a special coordinator for the adoption of the euro, having failed to agree on a proposal raised by junior coalition party STAN. Prime Minister Petr Fiala's ODS party is known to be sceptical of joining to eurozone, while opinion polls suggest that the sentiment is shared by the wider public.
  • Lidove Noviny reported that Prime Minister Fiala was due to meet with new Pirate Party leader Zdenek Hrib. Fiala recently told CTK that his "hand remains extended" to the Pirates and his "arms are open," noting that he regretted their abrupt exit from the ruling coalition.
  • Later in the day, the Prime Minister will lead a press conference on the fulfilments of the targets of his government, marking the third anniversary of the day when he took office.
