Democrats And Republicans Agree That '50s' Is Ideal Age For President

US

A new survey from the Pew Research Center has found that both Democrats and Republican believe a president should ideally be in their 50s, supporting suggestions that the age of both frontrunning candidates for the presidency, President Biden and former President Donald Trump, will be a significant political issue leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

  • Pew: “Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are slightly more likely than Republicans and Republican leaners (25% vs. 15%) to prefer presidents in their 30s and 40s, while Republicans are slightly more likely than Democrats to prefer presidents in their 60s or older (32% vs. 24%)."
  • Although there are currently no credible Democrat primary challengers to President Biden, if polling number don't improve, President Biden's age, and capacity to serve another term, may force a shakeup of the primary calculus as 2024 draws nearer.
  • One potential Democrat candidate, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), has made recent moves consistent with a presidential run but is unlikely to present himself as a candidate unless Biden chooses to step aside.
