Denmark May Be Tasked with Policing Russian Oil Sanctions Breaches: FT
OIL
Denmark could be tasked with inspecting and potentially blocking Russian oil sailing through its waters according to EU plans reported by the FT Wednesday.
- Denmark would target tankers transiting through the Danish straits without Western insurance the FT reported.
- Denmark would police the action because all of Russia’s oil shipped through the Baltic Sea, or roughly 60% of its total seaborne exports, crosses the Danish straits on its way to international markets.
- The West is exploring ways to enforce sanctions on Russian oil that have been largely ineffective other than forcing Russia to offer its crude at a discount to attract buyers. In recent months the discount has greatly diminished.
