Denmark to Introduce Levy on Farm Emissions from 2030

Denmark is planning to introduce a levy on farm emissions, marking the world’s first carbon tax on agriculture, the government said.

  • Danish farmers will be taxed 300 kroner/ton CO2e ($43) from 2030.
  • From 2035, the levy will increase to 750 kroner/ton CO2e, while farmers will benefit from higher tax deductions.
  • The plan is expected to reduce emissions by 1.8mn tons of CO2 in 2030.
  • The government first started discussing the tax in February.
