E3 Backs Off From Submitting Resolution Critical Of Iran To IAEA

IRAN

Seemingly confirming an earlier tweet from Laurence Norman at the WSJ, the E3 countries (France, Germany, the UK) have backed off from submitting a resolution critical of Iran to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The resolution was set to call out Tehran for its lack of cooperation with IAEA inspectors following the suspension of the 'Additional Protocol' in February. The potential resolution was criticised by Iran and Russia, both warning of 'serious consequences' if the resolution was submitted.

  • Earlier this week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stated that "The nuclear tensions will lead us in the coming days to put forward a protest in the framework of the IAEA Board of Governors to regret this decision,", only for the E3 to then back down today.
  • Norman also reported his sources as saying that the pressure for the critical resolution did not come from Washington, D.C., with the Biden administration slowly shifting towards greater engagement with Tehran.
