ELECTRICITY: Polish Offshore Wind Auction Max Price Too Low: Ministry

ELECTRICITY

The proposed maximum price for Poland’s offshore wind auctions of PLN471.83/MWh (around €110/MWh) is too low, and an adequate price level is crucial for the country’s successful energy transition, Poland’s state assets minister said, cited by Reuters.

  • "The price set at the level, which will not allow the execution of the OWF projects, may result in the lack of interest of entrepreneurs in participating in the OWF [offshore wind farms] auction in 2025 (...) which, in turn, will threaten to delay the execution of further OWF projects in the Baltic Sea by up to 3-4 years," the minister said.
  • The Polish Wind Energy Association (PSEW) previously also criticized that the price level is too low due to overly optimistic investment cost assumptions. while costs related to balancing supply and demand, grid bottlenecks and negative electricity prices are underestimated.
  • The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment proposed the maximum purchase price in a draft regulation in August with the first auction for 4GW planned for 2025.
