EU Appeal To US: Align Foreign Pols To Counter China - BBG

Bloomberg reports that the European Union is set to ramp up appeals to the US in order to align its foreign policy objectives with the EU, arguing that a united western force would stand a better chance of influencing China to pursue fairer trade policies.

  • Wires reporting that this will extend to advocating WTO reforms to the US that will allow the west to better confront China.
  • There is likely to be some scepticism towards this headline given many EU member states have tried to balance their foreign policy between ensuring US defence support in Europe but also attracting Chinese investment in their economies. A sudden full pivot towards the US, even with a more pro-EU administration in Washington, D.C. , seems a somewhat unlikely prospect.
