EU Chief Unconvinced About French/Spanish Gas Pipeline Profitability

It’s unclear if a gas pipeline connecting the Spanish and French grids would be profitable according to EU industry chief Thierry Breton.

  • The idea, promoted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is designed to help Europe wean itself off Russian gas by using Spanish LNG import capacity.
  • Macron however is not in favour of the project claiming existing pipeline infrastructure is already underutilised.
  • Conversations on the idea may occur at tomorrow’s emergency EU meeting on the energy crisis with most popular plans touted so far presenting significant drawbacks while more feasible solutions are likely years off.
