Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan holds a joint press conference with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas following discussions between the two in Ankara. A live stream to the presser, due to start any time now, can be found here.
- This is Kallas' first trip to Turkey since taking office in Dec 2024. Ahead of the meeting she posted on X: "Glad to be in Ankara today. I am looking forward to meaningful discussions with political leaders and civil society to strengthen our ties."
- The EU finds itself in a difficult balancing act with Turkey. Negotiations on Turkish accession to the EU have crawled at a snail's pace in recent years as the gov't of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan moved away from EU norms in certain policy areas. This has seen Erdogan develop closer links with countries and groups viewed as economic and geostrategic competitors to the EU such as the BRICS group. However, Turkey's role in managing migrant flows to Europe, in any possible ceasefire talks in Ukraine, and following the collapse of the Assad regime in neighbouring Syria has led Brussels to look to repair ties.
- During Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's meeting with Erdogan in Dec 2024, Erdogan called for EU member state leaders "to set aside “all restrictions” in bilateral relations with Ankara to restart the high-level political dialogue—suspended since 2019—and to [finalise] two long-term goals for Turkey: upgrading the Customs Union and introducing visa facilitation."
